It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s YOU!
Who has not seen a superhero movie? If you truly haven’t, I beg you to go watch at least one. The Incredibles is a good one! Family friendly too.
I know when I was growing up, I always tried to imagine what it would be like to have a super power. The X-Men movies always appealed to me. I used to think it would be cool to read minds like the Professor, or to have healing powers like Logan. Being able to fly or walk through walls. The possibilities were endless!
As cool and rad as all those options may seem, we humans can never obtain it. We do have limits to what we can do (yeah, I’m talking to you daredevils out there!). We are not invincible. We can get hurt.
The reason we can’t read minds, or have magical healing powers is the fact that we are human. There is only one being, not human, that has the ability to do all things. He can read minds. He can fly. He can flood the earth. He can heal our hearts, bodies, and minds. Who is He you may ask? This being who is not human? God.
Superheroes do exist and it’s in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
God knows each of our thoughts before they even cross our minds. He knows our hearts inside and out. Now, I mentioned before that I used to think it would be cool to read other people’s mind. I never said I would like for my mind to be read by other people. Trust me, my thoughts aren’t always too nice about the people I am surrounded by at the time. I’m sure you have felt the same way from time to time.
But someone has been reading my mind, and has been reading yours as well. Scary thought huh? God knows all the things I think and he is aware of all that I do. He knows all the things of the future as well. As it might feel like an invasion of privacy, I almost feel safe too.
It’s a comfort to me knowing that at least someone knows what will happen to me. Because if I’m being honest, not knowing what will happen in the future is terrifying.
Psalm 139: 1-6 reads:
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.
Superhero movies are great. They make me feel like I can conquer the world. Those movies also give me an idea of what it must be like for God who has the ability to do anything. His powers surpass our understanding, but through superhero characters, we can at least have a tiny bit of representation of what he might be like.
Watching action movies with characters who have supernatural abilities reminds me that I have my own superhero watching out for me and keeping me safe. The great part is that He isn’t just my superhero, but He is everyone’s superhero. God had a plan to allow everyone to have access to Him and His kingdom. Through His son’s sacrifice! He loves us that much to sacrifice his own son so everyone could enter heaven, if we choose to believe in Jesus.
I have a sticker on my laptop that says, “I make the story come alive. What’s your superpower?” Now, I am no where close to being a superhero, but God has given tools in our lives. Writing is one of the talents that God has given me, and the real “superpower” He has given all believers is to share His word with everyone else. So, I encourage you to go out, fly among the clouds with your red cape flapping behind you, and witness to others.
